So Mum is now in Italy. We begin in Rome, and fittingly we begin more or less in the most ancient area of Rome - an area enclosing the Colosseum, the Foro Romano and Plebiscite. We entered the Colosseum which she quickly compared to the MCG - right down to the mode of ticketing and entry. But once inside, her jaw dropped, just as mine did when I first entered 3 years ago.
The scale is amazing. She can't believe that this was constructed so long ago without today's technology - "the Westgate Bridge fell down before it was even finished" she quips.
I point to the spot in the Roman Forum where Julius Caeser was killed by Brutus, at the oratory, in a scene perpetuated by Shakespeare. I feel that she is incredulous: "Am I really here?"
